Landcraft Make a Splash! – July 2010

The evening began at Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay where we were strongly advised by our ?skipper? to wear the waterproof clothing provided. As we boarded the speed boat and started our journey to the sound of Sponge Bob Square Pants blaring from the onboard speakers, little did we know quite what was in store for us after we passed through the Cardiff Bay Barrage lock and headed out to sea passing Penarth pier along the way.

Clearing the lock entrance the boat quickly accelerated, skipping across the waves and by now all the careful preparation of hair and make-up by the ladies on board was rendered useless and replaced with fixed expressions of large grins and squinting eyes as copious amounts of sea spray flew across the speeding boat.

We were promised ?air time? and warned that we may get wet. Rounding Flat Holm island our skipper delivered on both counts, as we flew back and fore across the white horses with the boat crashing through the waves.

Soon we were back in the relative safety of Cardiff Bay lock and a chance for us to catch our breath. There was just time for a blast around the bay, jumping over our wake on a flat out twisting tour of the bay. We were able to view our landscaping handy work on the Cardiff Bay Barrage from a different perspective as we flashed past before landing back at Mermaid Quay.

We then retired to a local bar to meet up with our land lubber colleagues for some well earned refreshment and a chance to reflect on our thrilling adventure. A great evening was had by all.
